Review of Ichi the Killer (2001) by Al M — 25 Apr 2008
Totally awesome and twisted--not for the faint of heart. One of Miike's best, although as a fried of mine once said "There's so much rape in that movie" and indeed there is. Again, not for those with weak constitutions.
But Ichi does an excellent job interrogating the nature of love, desire, devotion, and the effects of a damaging childhood. It also deconstructs our love of violence and depravity and the lines that separate us from them.
