Review of I, Tonya (2017) by William L — 06 Jan 2019
Wow. What an amazingly awful and saddening little comedy this is. I thoroughly loved it. The horrendous life of the main character is portrayed masterfully by Margot Robbie. But don't host illusions, friends, this is not a movie about skating.
It's a movie about the cycle of abuse and how many people contribute to the ruination of another human person. If there is a redeeming moment in the movie it is at the very epitaph when we read that Tonya Harding has a 7 year old son by her new marriage and how she wants the world to know that she is a good mother; not a good skater, not a good boxer, not a famous hillbilly - but a good mother.
If it takes this sort of awful tragedy to recalibrate one's priorities then god help us all.
