Review of I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016) by D B — 12 Feb 2017
This is not a horror movie. This is a ghost story. It is slow, and I believe it is painfully slow because that is how the narrator sees things, not necessarily because that's how things were. This is not what it appears to be at first.
Time is not what it seems. Things are not what they seem. This is a story told in retrospect by someone who has died and can no longer see things clearly, and who may not have a clear idea of time. One of the most interesting movies I've seen in years.
In the beginning, the narrator ghost identifies herself before death by a nametag, not because she recognizes herself. I had to pay close attention and watch it again to catch the meaning and nuances of the movie.
The 2nd time I saw it, I saw that it was not as simple as it seemed, things were not on the surface at all. Even what Lily was wearing in the opening scene has meaning. The meaning is there, if you look for it.
Excellent movie.
