Review of Humpday (2009) by Heather M — 16 Jan 2010
The plot description of this movie didn't exactly grab me, but I've been a big fan of Mark Duplass's work ever since I saw him at SXSW and I had heard some good things about this one, so I decided to check it out when Netflix put it on instant watch.
It seems like the kind of movie that would have a political agenda, or go for cheap raunchy humor, but it didn't at all. That isn't to say it is appropriate for younger audiences, but much to my surprise it was a very charming and honestly performed movie.
The characters were totally believable, and in the end the movie is about them and not getting a laugh out of a silly premise. What comedy there is works best during the awkward intimate conversations.
They aren't awkward in an over-the-top Ben Stiller movie type way, but in a perfectly realistic fashion that a viewer can relate to and find humor in. The handheld camera, improvisational dialogue, and subtle performances all work together marvelously.
