Review of Howl (2010) by Ryan R — 11 Oct 2010
Here are the great things about this movie ....
1) A wonderful effort at recreating a poem through animation. I think even many of the literary people who are drawn to this film have not recently read or reread "Howl." They'll get James Franco's reading of the poem and a visual reinterpretation of that poem.
2) A positive representation of a gay man who lived an open and full life, became rich and famous, and died an old and healthy man. Some people will think that the film sugarcoats Ginsberg's life, but that's a matter of interpretation. In an era when gay kids are still committing suicide because of their sexuality, this film sends a ray of hope.
3) The excruciating sight of the literary critics at the witness stand, determining whether the poem has artistic merit or not. It's a wake-up call to all of us to avoid pomposity!
4) James Franco!
