Review of Hotel Chevalier (2007) by Catherine R — 16 Oct 2007
A gorgeously gloomy and heartbreaking look at what sort of movies Wes Anderson could make if he wasn't intent on... well, being Wes Anderson. Yes, it is still uniquely 'Anderson,' but for these thirteen minutes, he quits the quirky, death-by-irony shtick for a pretty vignette about doomed love.
'Chevalier' features a beautiful folk song, 'Where Do You Go To (My Lovely),' by Peter Sarstedt, and a lovely setting-- a hotel in Paris-- as well as two talented actors. I haven't seen 'Darjeeling,' and don't know if I will, but 'Hotel Chevalier' stands well enough on its own as a short, and is definitely worth a viewing or two.
