Review of Hostel (2006) by Philip S — 28 Sep 2012
This film dramatizes a xenophobe's worst fears about being isolated and terribly vulnerable in a foreign country. If nothing else, I'm going to show this one to my students who want to head off to Amsterdam the next time I lead a Study Abroad trip.
It's not all hash bars and sex, guys. . . . as Paxton and Josh find out in the most horrible fashion imaginable. Paxton's descent into hell is absolutely harrowing. His attempt to save a female acquaintance from a fate worse than death gives him a moment of redemption, quickly offset by his desire to take grisly revenge upon his tormentors.
It will be interesting to see what role Paxton's character plays in the upcoming sequel. . . .
