Review of Her (2013) by Robert B — 31 Mar 2016
This movie surprised me. I don't know why but when I heard the premise I fealt that it was a little beneath Spike Jonze, but I'll gladly admit I was totally wrong on that front. Jonze, here creates an amazing futurescape, in that it looks relatively like the present except everything has changed- sentient OS's have become common place and it's even hinted at the Joaquin falling in love with Samantha (his OS, played here by Scarlet Johansson) isn't really an uncommon occurrence.
You may have noticed that I used the term OS instead of A.I, that's because that's how the movie refers to these sentient beings. There is nothing artificial about these characters and while that may sound cutesy or gimmicky the movie actually follows through on this and presents Samantha as a living character who just happens to lack an actual body. She has her own insecurities and her own story arc.
It's a wonderful movie, and I think you'll enjoy it.
