Review of Hellboy (2004) by Michael V — 03 Dec 2011
Easily one of the best comic book movies out there. It's simply just one exciting damn fine fun kick ass movie. You do not have to be a fan of the comic to enjoy this movie. It's fantastic mix of storytelling with family devotion, love, overcoming prejudice, sacrifice, with action and comedy in a comicbook stylized way.
Ron Perlman makes this movie. It just wouldn't have been the same with anyone else. The make-up is amazing and gives him an dark voice with a blue collar attitude and the humor of a frat boy. Karel Roden plays a great villain.
Very evil and one of the eeriest bad guys to walk on film. What really got me loving this movie was the sets and make up designs. They went old school and had people in creature suits. The giant lack of CGI was refreshing.
I love that del Toro only uses it when it is completely necessary. I wish more filmmakers had that mentality.
