Review of Heart of Glass (1976) by Evan H — 20 Feb 2010
Holy shit.
I'm marching onward into the HEART of the Herzog oeuvre with a film that I presume is about the Blondie song!
No. It's not. But HOLY SHIT. I'm not sure if it helps or hurts to know the story behind how Herzog made this, but SPOILER ALERT.
Herzog hypnotized all of his actors. I can't think of a better way to convey madness in a tiny Bavarian town outside of a Monty Python skit.
This has a lot of what we (you) stereotypical European (German) tropes: fetishes, sexualization of glass, blowing round red things, weird (What you the unwashed masses would call Lynchian) acting and storytelling, not to mention artsy cryptic non-sequiturs.
And it's only 90 minutes long! That's perfect! Seriously. This is great.
