Norwegian cinema differs starkly from that of other cultures, in that the writers and directors still get their education through live theater. More often than not this causes creative conflict as the studios seek to emulate Hollywood-style filmmaking.

Poppe, instead, takes Norwegian film into its own right with Hawaii, Oslo, creating a masterpiece of meaningful dialogue and human interaction, with a structure and progression strongly reminiscent of early 20th Century theater.

This review of Hawaii, Oslo (2004) was written by on 23 Jul 2007.
