Review of Grace of Monaco (2014) by Ming Siu G — 16 May 2014
Hang on, this film is much better than the critics lead you to believe. After their reviews, we went in to see it with low expectations but came out feeling very positive. By definition it has a big storyline - the cultural clash faced by a girl from Philadelphia who married a European Prince - but it also reveals how perilous Rainier's position became in the face of pressure from De Gaulle.
It must also be challenging for a contemporary to portray an iconic actress from the past, especially one as widely admired as Grace Kelly. However a terrific performance by Nicole Kidman means this film presents a wholly sympathetic portrait of Princesse Grace. Tim Roth is very good as Rainier, as are Robert Lindsay as Onassis and Frank Langella too. And of course, the Riviera locations are simply wonderful. Go and see it.
