Review of Goyokin (1969) by Michael T — 11 Aug 2012
Goyokin is a splendid chanbara classic. The story is compelling (despite feeling familiar), the lead performance by the great Nakadai is brilliant, and the pacing and sense of tension and excitement is great. The action scenes are especially commendable because they feel uniquely realistic. There are great moments that are actual fight scenes instead of the the usual "slaying scenes." It really allows you to appreciate Nakadai's skill and intensity.
The score is a bit cheesy and the story hard to follow at times, but overall Goyokin is an easily enjoyable samurai classic.
