Review of Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) by Erik B — 11 Aug 2014
In light of his passing, I find it appropriate to revisit the Robin Williams film that had the most profound effect on me. "Good Morning, Vietnam" on its own, is a brilliant war dramedy that's every bit as haunting as it is hilarious. But, on a personal level, this movie kind of changed me.
When I was in High School, I used to do the morning announcments. Being the goofy overacheiver that I am, I refused to settle for anything less that exciting. So, every morning I got on that mic, I wanted to do it just like Robin Williams. From the opening "GOOOOODDD MOOORNING..." greeting, to the silly voiced and dynamic personality, I modelled my entire image based on a performance from a screen legend. Williams, for this reason, will always hold a special place in my heart. He was a wonderful performer and this is one of his finest roles.
