Review of Glorious 39 (2009) by Ursula H — 06 Apr 2010
This NOT a historical movie, so don't look for a political and authentic story-line, but a sort-of-a-thriller set in 1939, just before the war, in England. Beautiful settings and costumes. Bad editing and a weak plot did not save the all over pretty much good cast.
The emphasis of domestic animal slaughters, which apparently did really happen in the beginning of WWII, was over dramatized and a cheap thread through the entire narrative and annoyed me immensely. The subplot in the beginning and especially in the end was utterly unnecessary and pointless.
However, Romola Garai is someone to look out for in the near future. I'm glad that Britains' new upcoming actresses, like her, as well as Emily Blunt, Carey Mulligan and Charlotte Reiley, are a far cry from the phlegmatic and anorexic Keira Knightley era.
