Review of Gimme Shelter (2013) by Scott M — 15 Nov 2008
The Altamont Free Concert will always be remembered as one of the worst moments in Rock and Roll history and a grim end of the 1960s ideals and Hippie movement.
The documentary's 'fly on the wall' approach is amazing with the footage caught on film; beginning with highlights of The Stones show at Madison Square Garden and inter-cutting footage leading up to the disastrous concert.
The footage of the concert at Altamont is so visceral and haunting as the everything slowly descends in chaotic madness ending in the stabbing of a gun waving concert goer by members of Hell's Angels.
If there's one positive thing can be said about Gimme Shelter, the Stones never sounded or looked better than they did here; and the Madison Square footage is a showcase of what made them at one time one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
