Review of Gattaca (1997) by Michael J — 21 Aug 2013
I'm not usually much of a fan of dystopian films; this utopia-turned-utopia is an exception. The story is topical and still current over 15 years after the film was made. The pacing is tense. The characters are engaging.
It's a story of the ultimate underdog, who has to fight against a society obsessed with gene sequencing, even going under the radar and illegally impersonating someone with a better double helix than he, to chase his dream of one day visiting space.
I had heard the title of this movie before, but never knew anything about it until it turned up in an online list of the "top 5 most underrated sci-fi films of all time." I agree: this one belongs on the list.
