Review of Gandhi (1982) by Codie E — 09 Feb 2009
Historical epics can occasionally fall into the trap of feeling like bloated love letters to their subjects (Malcolm X), but when they are successfully portrayed, such as this film, they can entertain, engage and challenge an audience.
Gandhi was in no doubt a remarkable man, and this film does so well in humanising him; allowing space for humour and as well as disappointment and ambition to shine through as well as his achievements.
Kinglsey in what was essentially his first true big screen outing, is an absolute wonder and is backed up by a superb supporting cast. Unforgettable.
