Review of Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995) by Steve R — 20 Oct 2010
The first of a revival trilogy of Gamera films made during the Godzilla vacuum of 1995-1998. It's standard gaint monster fare with a decent plot and likeable characters. There are some shocking scenes, such as Gaos picking open a train carriage like a tin of sardines and chewing on the contents.
The special effects are not quite up to what Toho were doing at the time, but they're inventive and well done. Directed by Shusuke Kaneko who would go on to direct the excellent Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack.
