Review of Funny Lady (1975) by Julio S — 16 Feb 2010
Wow was this movie bad. It tried too hard to be "stage-show"-ish. Most of the musical numbers did not have anything to do with forwarding the story or letting you in on a person's personality, but seemed to just exist for the sake of "we need a number". Yes, the show was supposed to be horrible but do we need to WATCH it be horrible completely instead of just snippets?
So instead of a rooting for a girl who has nothing and seeing her become something, we have the same woman, but now is a bitch and wants more, but thinks so lowly of herself she's willing to take a sleazy guy like Caan's character who's so unlikable I don't see how anyone could want to see them work it out. And then Sharif was just plain creepy in this one just standing around trying to get by on looks that are waaay behind him at this point in time.
There was just nothing likable about this one, a complete 180 degree turn from Funny Girl.
