Review of Free State of Jones (2016) by Patrick R — 28 Jun 2016
A historically important and little known story, gripping and action packed. Definitely a Best Actor nomination coming for Matthew McConaughey, who gives a powerhouse performance, maybe his best work to date. After seeing it, I couldn't believe some reviews were mixed -- but then I remembered that sadly, it's fashionable among movie critics to be lukewarm to big budget films like this one.
The truth is, this movie is a stunning achievement cinematically on many levels, despite its unfortunate title, which will likely deter people from seeing it. More than any movie I've seen, it gave me a clear understanding what life was like for many during the nightmare of the Civil War and in the tumultuous, dark months and years that followed. See this epic film. You'll enjoy its panoramic sweep, stupendous production values, edge of your seat storytelling, and yes, you'll be royally entertained.
