Review of Fish Tank (2009) by Kenneth M — 21 Feb 2010
Andrea Arnold's "Fish Tank" just won the BAFTA for Best British Film. It's an emotionally complex tale of a troubled teen named Mia who lives in Essex public housing with her younger sister and their often inebriated mother.
Mia gets into her fair share of trouble, but dreams of being a dancer. Encouragement to follow her dreams comes in the form of Connor, a handsome younger man who begins dating her mother. Things in Mia's life go from bad to worse when her & Connor drunkenly have sex one night while her mom is already passed out drunk upstairs. This moment sends her already slowly free-falling existence into a straight up downward spiral of disaster.
Katie Jarvis, a non-professional actor in her first role, gives a performance here that just amazed me. I think we'll be seeing her in a lot more films in the next few years.
