Review of Ex Machina (2015) by William B — 02 Feb 2018
A very deft merger of lo-fi and high concept. The film is small, but deals with huge issues of consent, conformity, anthopicization, gender dynamics, and so much more. Certainly a movie that will keep you thinking for a while after. The movie doesn't shy away from the technological chatter, but it doesn't revel in it either. It's in that sweet spot where verisimilitude is served without losing the general audience.
If the movie suffers from anything, it has the indie tendency to meander a bit in places. I'm personally a fan of that-- a movie that completely services the plot at all times is a little unrealistic to life.
All in all, one of the best movies I've seen in the last few years, and an excellent performance by Oscar Isaac in particular.
