Review of Elmer Gantry (1960) by Gabriel L — 12 Sep 2008
Burt Lancaster always was a likable actor. He proved that over and over. But Elmer Gantry takes his acting to heights we never seen from him. He is a dynamo, he is at his peak, and we are privileged to watch this brilliant character unfold and then disintegrate. Lancaster is most assuredly this film. This masterpiece by ace director Richard Brooks has so many twists and turns, it changes every minute, which is a welcoming change from "straight laced filmmaking. Other members of the cast to look for: Jean Simmons, one of her best, Shirley Jones, amazing as the "wrecked" prostitute, Dean Jagger, Philip.
Ober, and Ed Andrews.
