Review of Downtown '81 (2001) by Kat F — 15 Nov 2007
I was lucky enough to see Downtown 81 at the Screening Room in Tribeca when it premiered in summer '01. I really can't say for sure whether the true star of this film was Jean Michel or New Wave-era nyc. The film develops the character of early 1980s nyc so richly that it made me nostalgic for a time and place to.
Which I had never been (I was scarcely a zygote in suburban New Jersey when this film was made). Overall, it is a great unpretentious art flick.
