Review of Downtown '81 (2001) by James T — 20 May 2008
Okay, the dialogue and story are ropey, and the it suffers from the fact that the sound had to be re-recorded 20 years later, but as a snapshot of the chaotic, broken-down, yet artistically fertile New York of the time it is second to none.
Great for playing spot-the-minor-celebrity, excellent musical performances from the likes of Kid Creole and James Chance, and an superb no-wave, punk-funk and early hip-hop soundtrack. A lush paean to a NYC that doesn't exist anymore.
