Review of Downloading Nancy (2008) by Laurence C — 17 Jun 2009
I know it probably goes without saying, but this is one strange film. Yes, the subject matter is very bizarre and unsettling. But what is most confusing is how the script can be so convoluted with such thinly-drawn characters, yet the film always remains intriguing and engaging due to the plot and the quartet of lead actors who do the best with their roles.
Maria Bello is unsurprisingly terrific (she's one of the most reliable actresses), and Patrick and Sewell excel in their roles, expressing the regret, love, and angst of their characters; Brenneman also puts in a solid, yet brief supporting performance.
The dialogue, at times, is so ineffective and generic, as it pushes these shock situations in your face just to get any sort of reaction. Nevertheless, "Downloading Nancy" is a troubled film that remains intriguing the entire way through due to the four actors' dedication to their (flawed) roles.
