Review of Dogtooth (2009) by Yara I — 23 Jul 2011
It's hard to explain the "charm' of this movie. There really isn't any. Perhaps that's the draw, it's anti-charm. It's a bleak excursion into the microcosm of the depraved.
A jet black satire about the family dynamic that is both horrifying and painfully hilarious. For some, the pacing might seem slow. At times it moves at a crawl. I think that's the point. Like the children, you're held hostage by writer/director Yorgos Lanthimos for the duration of this film.
The plot seems to be the daily slice of life happens of a family determined to warp their children beyond social redeem-ability and establish a lifelong co-dependence for the family unit. It's beautifully shot, knowingly maddening, and unapologetic in it's presentation.
