Review of Dogtooth (2009) by Joshua B — 06 Aug 2011
This off-the-wall Greek film from director Giorgos Lanthimos mixes horror and humour to create a thoroughly strange movie experience. It is hard to review Dogtooth, because really the less you know going in the better.
The film is sly and sometimes comical in its satire of overparenting (take it as a political metaphor if you will, though that might not be what the film is going for), but it is also deeply disturbing both in its violent content and for the fine line it reveals between protection and dysfunction.
It is gripping for its entire 96 minutes, with a final frame that will leave you discussing.
