Review of Dog Day Afternoon (1975) by Johnathon W — 11 Nov 2014
Classic crime drama that remains one of the best ever made, thanks to naturalistic work from in front of & behind the camera. Pacino leads a superb cast, all who give the best performances of their careers, never flashy but realistic to the point they could be the actual characters.
Behind the camera, Lumet crafts one of the best films (and that saying something) giving a naturalistic, almost documentary take (notice there is no film score) while not dramatizing the social subjects, such as the treatment of gays & transgenders.
The film is even more timely today in the depiction of the media & how a simple robbery can turn into a circus. A true classic.
