Review of Detropia (2012) by Theresa W — 24 Sep 2012
A beautiful tone-poem about Detroit in all its decaying splendour. There are a few facts splashed across the screen illustrating Detroits massive population decline of late, some portraits of its citizens from mayor to humble wrecking crews and a bit of daily life among the ruins but its mostly scenery with the hopeful tone of the film contracted by the images on the screen.
And what spectacular images they are! The whole film kind of has the feel of a student film where if you have an interest in the subject matter, you will have no problem appreciating the self-indulgence of the artful, lingering imagery accompanied by an appropriately arty, modern soundtrack.
Detroit is an urban Ozymandias and this is a brilliant look at the decay of that colossal wreck.
