Review of Dean Spanley (2008) by Andrea B — 10 Feb 2009
The tragic thing about some films is that they're too nice for their own good. In the whole of Oxford, only one independent cinema took Dean Spanley, and then for just one week. It has no violence; no sex; no bad language, and no speeding car chases (well it would n't in Victorian Wisbech - but you know what I mean), but relied on a heart-warming, gentle-paced story line, beautifully played by a cast of only 6-7 people, and two gorgeous dogs. It was brilliant !! Peter O'Toole, who by rights should have died long ago after a life spent with regular drinking buddies.
Throughout the 60s and 70s, was at his acting best. Frail now in body maybe, but terrifically strong in presence and dialogue delivery. He was perfectly complimented by Jeremy Northam; Sam Neill, and Bryan Brown, and a spaniel called Wag. And the significance of Wag? Well, you'll have to watch the film to find out !!
