Review of Dark Horse (2015) by Mo S — 07 May 2016
If you were inspired by Seabiscuit you'll love the documentary Dark Horse, about a barmaid in a Welsh mining village who dreams of owning a racehorse, setting in motion a Full Monty underdog plot, with a syndicate of 22 each contributing $15 a week for training.
Buying Rewbell, an old mare, for $450, they breed her to Bien Bien, a colt which had broken a track record at Hollywood Park, for a bargain $5,000. Born in 2001, Dream Alliance surprises everyone by coming 4th in his first hurdle race, going on to win several more.
Then he severs a tendon, often a death sentence for a racehorse. But the owners vote for expensive stem cell therapy-paid for from his winnings. Eventually, Dream returns to the track-and wins a major race.
Now a star, he races in the Grand National, known as "the ultimate test of horse and rider.".
