Review of Dancer in the Dark (2000) by Mark T — 28 Sep 2008
One of the best movies of the past 25 years, Dancer in the Dark is equal parts sad and inspirational, true and hyperreal. While Bjork will mostly be remembered for the outfit she wore at the Oscars, she should be rememebered for giving one of the bravest performances on film of our generation.
The musical numbers are some of the most original escapist bits of wonder... fantastically unique and so memorable. This genre-bending weeper of a movie is not for everyone, but cinematically and spiritually it is astonishing.
Being a parent now, I feel even deeper for the plight of this woman who would do anything for her child. Be brave, come with an open mind, and see this film.
