Review of Coonskin (1975) by Stefan G — 01 Aug 2013
You could think of this as the "black Looney Tunes", but that'd be missing the point entirely. The entire purpose of the film's art style is to satirize black stereotypes and blaxploitation films, but it works so well that Ralph Bakshi may as well have created his own animated blaxploitation film in its own right.
The characters are well-designed, and they're all so lively in character that it's frankly quite contagious, and it seeps into the way the story is told. I also like the general style of the movie, which fits in so well with the film's artistic goal.
I don't think that this film is racist at all. In fact, I think that it would be more racist to not make this film out of fear that it would offend certain people. But sadly, it's just not possible to make this kind of film anymore.
