Review of City of Life and Death (2009) by Tom B — 27 Jan 2011
A wildly powerful film about the occupation of China's capital by the invading Japanese army during WWII. At first I thought it would merely be a cheap knock-off of Saving Private Ryan but transcended these early scenes of battle to become something truly emotionally devastating.
It is an extremely uncompromising and harsh film but this is balanced with a surprising amount of political objectivity, stunning black and white photography and characters you care to invest in.
