Review of Chasing Amy (1997) by Gena D — 23 Feb 2014
By turns staggeringly hilarious, incredibly sweet, and heartbreakingly painful, this is a wonderful film only let down by the last ten minutes. The (often foul mouthed) back and forths that Smith produces are almost balletic and (again excluding the last ten minutes) never seem rehearsed, whilst the story of sexual politics and gender roles has (perhaps unfortunately) not aged in the last fifteen years.
It is easily Smith's best film - more real than Dogma, less tedious than Clerks, and just better than Clerks II - and deserves to be held in much higher esteem than it is, and not just because for a decade Chasing Amy - and Good Will Hunting - were the only proof Ben Affleck had that he should be in films.
