Review of Calendar (1993) by Richard S — 24 Oct 2007
On first viewing, I find this easier to "appreciate" than actually enjoy. That Egoyan was able to shoot a resonant film in Armenia for ~$100,000 is a miracle by almost any standards. The structure (especially if you've read next to nothing about the film) is initially confusing, but later, you realize it couldn't have worked any other way.
Although I think Ceylon's "Climates" is a superior film, "Calendar" looms heavily. While they don't share the same rigid structure, they explore almost identical themes. Next time it'll be a double feature.
