Review of Café Lumière (2004) by Mike N — 30 Oct 2007
Far from the slavish Ozu pastiche I was expecting, this at once demonstrated Ozu's profound comfort in the everyday, and his sense of characters unconscious drawing toogether towards a bittersweet happiness, as well as feeling (and looking) incredibly fresh and modern - Hsiao-Hsien seems more concerned with the special people, the outsiders, than Ozu - the final scene is at once hopelessly sweet and compellingly genuine.
