Review of Caché (2005) by David Ray G — 25 Jun 2008
A lot of people are mad because of the lack of a clear resolution but I thought it worked perfectly. If we actually found out who sent the tapes, I think it would just be a cheap pay-off. This film, I believe, is more about how these seemingly random events affect this "ordinary" family. The way it brings up themes of trust and guilt is magnificent. This could have been a typical hollywood thriller but it turns into so much more than that by presenting us with real characters instead of just puzzle pieces to connect together to have a a simple mystery. Michael Haneke's directing in this was amazing. I loved how he stayed on shots and didn't really make them stand out from the rest of the shots in the film. This made it more eerie because we never know if we are watching the Laurents or if it's suddenly going to begin fast forwarding or rewinding.
P.S. - Pay CLOSE attention to the last shot of the movie.
