Review of Bright Future (2003) by Darryl S — 11 Apr 2008
A new and original use of symbolic irony for that most banal of hopeful phrases ("Bright Future"). Luminous jelly fish -- a deft and uncontrived emblem for apocalypse -- is used in the way my fears utilized the A-bomb in the last generation of the Cold War.
I certainly felt that it would be a very bright future, indeed. But instead of going out in a blaze of glory, Kurosawa presents a case for the end of the world through dispiriting, mind-numbing, entropy.
The slow, agonizing, heat-death of the universe is exemplified in the violent mayhem that is born of shear boredom and desperate loyalty. What happens when the jelly fish return, I wonder?
