Review of Blue Spring (2001) by Michael Y — 23 Jun 2007
This movie has some similar themes to battle royale, suicide circle and all about lily chou chou. They all deal with the problems that teens inevitably face, in this case, it's the nihilistic attitudes that the kids have and the urge to prove to others that they are the best of the best.
In this movie, leaders of gangs play a little game to determine who the boss of the school is, they hang from the side of the school and clap as many times before clinging back on. The cinematography isn't so great but the greatly developed characters makes up for that, although there was 1 scene that I ABSOLUTELY LOVED, when Aoki is on the roof holding onto the bar for a day, and the distant shots were very nice, I also really liked the whole planting of flowers between the 3 friends to show change.
The violence that happens in this movie is absolutely brutal but the director cleverly always puts it JUST out of the camera angle. OVERALL GREAT MOVIE if you are into movies with a "meaning".
