Review of Blue Jay (2016) by Alexis K — 25 Jun 2018
What a shocking surprise this film was. I had it on my 'to watch' list for months but would never give it a go. It kept calling me, however, and I've never seen anything like it. Many have tried to do this kind of nostalgia but no one, that I know of, has succeeded so thoroughly.
Paulson and Duplass are luminous, their heart stopping layers of patina, the ones only time and soot can give, making the gleem, that still shines beneath, all the more gorgeous. Deeply affecting writing, without tricks, grabbed me over and over.
Alexandre Lehmann's direction is way beyond debut status, guiding his actors and his shots without the usual clichés that a lesser director would succumb to. See this film!
