Review of Bird (1988) by Joshua T — 25 Jul 2008
This movie at first glance appears jumbled and chaotic, much like the life of the man it depicts. but when it hits its stride, it blows past Ray, walk the Line, and every other recent attempt to explain away a musician's addictive personality.
Forest Whitaker proved to me here that he is a godsend, and the third act of this film displayed one of the most intensely memorable performances and exhibits of direction I've seen in quite some time.
it may prove slow going for non-jazz fans at first, but its hooks, once they get in you, sink deep.
