Review of Berberian Sound Studio (2012) by Alan W — 10 Nov 2017
Technically fascinating (and extremely effective) but narratively frustrating, this is either Lynchian (if you are being kind) or head-scratching, pseudo-meaningful art-tosh that will 'divide its audience'.
While this is no doubt ambitious and thus laudably different from most things found in your local cineplex, what began as something promising and interesting soon delve deeper into a rabbit hole where logic and narrative coherence is thrown out the window with the deformed, bloodied baby.
I am not saying this is a bad film, just one I find hard to justify: towards the end of the film, as things get more and more loopy, you do have the doomed sense that the film is just going to end at any random moment.
And randomly, it did - and frankly I just didnt get it - though I cant say I regret seeing this. One for those with a specific, acquired taste, I guess.
