Review of Beautiful Kate (2009) by Jane A — 22 Aug 2009
A very Australian film. Understated, brutal, under-budgeted, raw... and so on. Bloke returns home to country (my friend observed that Americans do the Wild West in a grandiose way, where as Australians show the outback blowflies and all).
.. Looking after his estranged Dad, picks over the details of that "last summer" when two of his siblings died. Rachel Griffiths, as always, an understated delight - the only wrong note was the city girlfriend Toni - who was, as my friend said, a "little too Summer Bay".
Good to see that Bryan Brown has gone from central blokey hero to crabby old dying bastard... much more believable...
