Review of Basquiat (1996) by Seán C — 18 Jun 2007
I didn't see Schanbel's follow-up work, but this one always bewitches me when I see it. Great cast, led by the terrific Jeffrey Wright, telling a too-short story of a talented young man who never knew how to channel any of his emotions outside of the art he created.
I think David Bowie's Warhol is a tremendous impression, not an impersonation, and that shot of Basquiat alone and childlike in the streets of New York when he's gutted by news of Andy's death tore through me.
I remember the day Andy died. I wish I'd known him. I wish I'd known everyone in this movie, including Rene. (Michael Wincott is a great actor, and I'm waiting for him to re-emerge.).
