Review of Basquiat (1996) by Filip M — 20 Dec 2007
I watched this in my art class during my freshman year of college. Man, what a powerful movie! It is incredibly sad and emotionally stirring, and you can but identify with Wright's Basquiat. As much a movie about artistic genius as about depression, alienation, and a desire to connect with other people.
The scenes are beautiful, especially the dress painting scene and most of those that are set to music. You can seldom identify with a character so well, and it doesn't hurt that Basquiat was a fascinating figure in art history to begin with.
