Review of Barfly (1987) by Simon D — 01 Mar 2008
Shot straight to one of my favourite films of all time. I love Mickey Rourke, particularly in Rumble Fish, in this he again channels that whimsical character who live in his own world and by his own rules.
This brought me into the world of Charles Bukowski, and what a fascinating place to inhabit. Barbet Schroeder does a fabulous job, the film is beautifully shot, engaging and exhilerating. Sexy, dark, and full of poison, its a mesmerising and surprisingly funny journey.
'So you hired a dick, to find an asshole'. Necessary viewing. Oh and very very far from preachy, the ending does what it should, not judge this brilliant soul, but rather bask in the chosen path.
This ain't Dante, this is Whiskey and barenuckle fighting.
