Review of Ballast (2008) by Matt L — 10 Feb 2010
The best art film I've seen in a long time. This is like one of those unsettling forign films where the characters are hopeless and the sounds and images are stark. This isn't Bosnia though, this is Mississippi, and the only way you can tell the difference is through color of skin and language. Thoughts of post-Katrina gulf coast were in my mind. But this is not a hot, wet movie, it's cold, dark, and murkey.
The characters in this film are incredibly sympathetic and the ending is nothing if not uplifting. A truely triumphant film.
